How to care for your inflatable SUP: Tips for long-lasting enjoyment on the water

Inflatable SUPs (stand-up paddleboards) are incredibly convenient: easy to transport, quick to set up, and affordable for many. However, to ensure you enjoy your inflatable companion for a long time and maximize its lifespan, proper care is crucial. Neglect can lead to material fatigue, mold growth, leaks, or unsightly stains.

Here are the most important steps and tips on how to properly care for your inflatable SUP:

1. Cleaning after each use (especially important!)

Rinse your board: The most important thing after every ride, especially in saltwater, is to rinse your board with fresh water. Saltwater can damage the material and adhesive joints over time. Sand, mud, or chlorinated water (from pools) should also be thoroughly removed. Use a soft sponge or cloth to gently wipe away any dirt.
Pay attention to the valve and fin box: Rinse the valve and fin box thoroughly to remove any sand or salt deposits.

2. Allow to dry completely

An absolute must before packing: Before rolling or folding your board, it must be completely dry. Moisture in the packed state is the main cause of mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors.
Drying location: Spread the board out in a shaded or partially shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight during drying (see point 4).
Dry both sides: Turn the board over so that the top and bottom as well as the rails (side edges) can dry thoroughly.

3. Regular inspection

Before and after inflation: Check the board regularly for small cuts, abrasions, scratches, or incipient leaks (often noticeable by tiny air bubbles when wet or a slight hissing sound).
Valve check: Make sure the valve is clean and can be closed tightly. Sometimes it helps to lightly grease the valve cap (with special silicone grease) to ensure a tight seal.

4. Proper storage

The type of storage depends on the duration:

Short-term (between tours):

Do not store the inflated board in direct sunlight. Pressure inside the board increases significantly in hot weather and can overload the seams or material.
If you plan to keep the board inflated (e.g., at a campsite), let out some air to prevent it from bursting when temperatures rise. Store it in the shade.

Long-term (over winter or longer breaks):

The board must be clean and completely dry.
Release all the air.
Roll or fold the board according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid excessive or sharp creases in the same places. Loose rolling without sharp edges is often better than tight folding.
Store the folded board in the designated bag in a cool, dry place with as constant a temperature as possible. Avoid extreme heat or cold, as well as high humidity. Basements or garages are often suitable, as long as they are dry.
Do not place heavy objects on the packed board.

5. Dealing with extremes

Sun and heat: As mentioned, never leave inflated boards in direct sunlight for extended periods. While paddling, the board is cooled by the water, but it heats up quickly on the shore.
Cold: Extreme cold makes the PVC material less flexible. Avoid inflating or deflating the board in subzero temperatures if at all possible. Do not store it permanently in extreme subzero temperatures.
Chafing and dragging: Never drag the board across rough surfaces (asphalt, concrete, sharp rocks), whether inflated or deflated. Carry it to and from the water.

6. Small repairs

Use the repair kit: Most inflatable SUPs come with a repair kit (patches, glue, and valve tool). A major advantage of inflatable SUPs is their ease of repair. Unlike hardboards, which require expensive and time-consuming repairs at a workshop, you can quickly and easily patch your board yourself and be back on the water in no time.

Patch small holes immediately: Fix small damage immediately before it gets bigger. Apply the iSUP repair glue to the matte side of the patch and inside the circle on your board using the small brush from your THURSO SURF repair kit.

Apply the adhesive carefully, making sure to stay within the circle to minimize mess and cleanup.

Keep in mind that this adhesive is often extremely strong. It's important to apply it correctly the first time. Familiarize yourself with the application beforehand and follow the instructions carefully during a test run.

Caring for your inflatable SUP isn't rocket science, but it does require some consistency – especially rinsing and drying thoroughly after every use. These simple steps will ensure your board stays in top condition for a long time, allowing you to enjoy countless hours of carefree paddling fun on the water.
